Vehicle fuel tank capacity

Vehicle fuel tank capacity (infographic)
Long description of the infographic

Your vehicle's owner's manual may state that its fuel tank holds a certain volume of fuel (e.g. 60 L). However, when the fuel tank is empty and you fill it up until the gas pump nozzle automatically shuts off, the gas pump may display a different volume. This doesn't mean that the gas pump is inaccurate.

The fuel tank's volume stated by the manufacturer is only an estimate. The actual volume of the tank can vary for a number of technical reasons. And, unlike the gas pump, the fuel tank's volume is not certified as accurate.

If you have concerns about the accuracy of a gas pump based on your vehicle's fuel tank capacity :

  • look for the inspection sticker to find out when the gas pump was last inspected
  • speak with the gas retailer
  • contact the vehicle dealer or manufacturer or your provincial consumer protection agency
